7 Small Habits To Start Doing Daily That Will Make Your Home Feel Cleaner

November 25, 2020

Over the last year I have lacked the motivation to get, just about anything done in my home. I felt unmotivated and overwhelmed by the way my home look and felt. It had turned into a space of overwhelm and stress. Rather than a home of rest and relaxation, Like I had wanted.

When I started seeing memories flash up on my Facebook from three or five years ago. I would feel happy about the people in it. Then as I looked deeper into the background I would see glimpses of what my home used to look like.

It was clean, tidy organised and had a lot less stuff.

Unlike now where our family has doubled and so has the amount of stuff. The bedrooms that used to have two beds max, now hold bunkbeds and stores the belonging of four children per room. Everything has doubled right down to the cutlery in our kitchen draws.

As I struggled with the frustration of picking up the same mess everyday. It some became clear what tasks made our house look instantly cleaner with as little effort as possible. On the days that I didn’t do them everything looked a mess.

That is why I began it focus on doing these task first. I knew I could do them without fighting against my inner self telling me to sit down and stop.

Make The Bed

I don’t know what it is with a made bed, but it makes any bedroom look cleaner. Even when nothing else is in its place. A made bed just finishes any bedroom and gives me a sense of accomplishment for the day. Even if I where to get nothing else done for the day because mumlife gets in the way. At least The bed has been made.

I always try to make my bed first thing in the morning as I get out of bed. It is a habit I try to practice because it seems to give me the motivation for the rest of the morning to get more done. On some morning I may have some bed invaders that have managed to sneak into my bed during the night. So it doesn’t always go as planned. But even when this happens, I will go make it while the kids are eating breakfast. I say to myself, “if you go make the bed now, you can have a coffee after it done. The kettle is boiling anyway.” It is like I mentally trick myself into doing it. But making the bed does get done.

Clean The Kitchen Sink

Having a clean and empty sink makes the kitchen look instantly cleaner. I always try to make it a goal to wash and dry all the dishes that I have in the sink in the morning. In my home I don’t have a dishwasher, so I have to hand wash all our dishes for a family of ten. Even if I am struggling with my inner voice that is telling me it is find to leave them. I push myself to do it after every meal.

Wiping the sink down after everytime I do the dishes is a great habit to start. It helps to declutter and keep that sink area clean and tidy. A quick wipe down and it is sparkling and clean. With the sinking being one of the quickest places in the kitchen to become cluttered and dirty. Staying on top of the dishes is a simple task to make your kitchen look instantly tidier. No matter how annoying this tedious task may seem.

Clean the Kitchen Table

Growing up in a home that was regularly over stuffed with stuff. The table was constantly covered in bits and bobs awaiting to be put away. But never making it to being put away. I remember always playing rock, paper, scissors with my older sister about who’s turn it was to clear the table for meals. More often than not, the stuff would be piles up on the area nobody would sit at. The table would always look untidy and I remember it to this day.

Now in my own home, I know how important it is to avoid making the kitchen table a dumping zone. Not only is it one of the focus pieces in the kitchen home decor but it will make the room look more tidy with a nice clear, maybe decorated, space. That is why this is such an important habit to start daily. Clearing and cleaning the table makes a nice uncluttered space for the family to come together and have a meal.

Vacuum The Floors

Vacuuming the floors is a great and simple way to make the house look tidier. But before you think that includes putting way everything that shouldn’t be on the floor. Like those baskets of washing for example, I don’t. When you are trying to get your home looking clean, or just maintaining the cleanliness of your home. I personally think it is ok to just vacuum around the basket if you can’t move them.

The whole point of vacuuming the floor is to get the specs of dirty off. Remove all the crumbs that have magically appeared for that nice clean floor to come through. Whether you have carpet, tiles or Lino flooring, a quick vacuum can never go astray as a daily habit.

Clean The Toilet

Now this one might just be a me thing. I can totally accept that, but with having a large family. Mostly made up of boys, our toilet room can get gross looking really quickly. I have a thing against a dirty toilet and the area around the toilet. It just irks me in all the wrong places. So having a good daily habit of giving the toilet a quick daily wipe down, easily helps this area of my home look so much cleaner.

Giving the toilet and the area around it a daily wipe down helps to remove those nasty germs and gross smells that can build up. It also cuts down on the amount of time I spend weekly deep cleaning this area. And that is a win, win in my book.

Take The Rubbish/Recycling Out

Rubbish and recycling can build up quickly. So can the smells that comes with the rubbish. I used to hate the smells in the kitchen after the usually three day wait for the bin to become full. Especially with the amount of dirty nappies that comes with having small children in the home. I decided to combat this that clearing the build up of rubbish and recycling daily. Making it apart of my habits to a cleaner and tidier home.

In our home, we have both our rubbish and recycling bins in the open. Not neatly hidden away in a kitchen cupboard. usually after I have done the dishes, cleaned the table and swept the floor after dinner. I will quickly run the daily rubbish and recycling out to the bins outside. Removing any horrible odours before they get the chance to begin to develop. It has been a bit game changer in our home on the aroma side of things since making it a daily habit.

Do A Collection Basket

The collection basket has to be one of my favourite secret weapon. It is only something I have developed a habit of in the last couple of months. It was a big game changer in the sense of limiting my overwhelm when it came to the daily clutter build in the dumping zones for my family.

I would become overwhelmed looking around the house seeing all the different areas, like on top of the mantel. Or on the top of cupboard in the homes entryway. Just seeing all the stuff everywhere and not knowing where to start made me not want to do it.

But I saw a person who was diagnosed with ADHD show her hack on maintain the clutter levels and decided to give it a go. Oh boy, did it change my world.

To be able to take a basket and run around the house putting all the clutter in the basket. Then taking one item at a time and putting it away where it was meant to be. This daily habit has help make my home so much cleaner. The overwhelm of having to do it all and not knowing how to start was removed as soon as I placed it all in the one basket. Now I only had the basket too empty.

The point to this post….

I struggled this year more than many other years before. To maintain a clean and tidy home. With more people in the house. Came more stuff along with them. It was absolutely overwhelming with everything else that is happening right now this year. But these 7 simple daily habits soon became my saviour in my mist of the overwhelm.

They soon became a habit that I did daily. Even when I got no other cleaning, decluttering or organising task done fore the day. These task made me feel happy knowing that I at least got the bare minimum done and the house looked cleaner. Even if it just looked like I was maintaining the mess.
